High MOI Putter

The Futura X5 landed in 2015 as Scotty Cameron's answer to a question a lot of his loyal blade players were quietly asking: what if I need more forgiveness without switching brands? For decades Cameron was the name you associated with a Newport, a compact heel-toe blade that punished a mishit. The X5 is the opposite animal. It is a mallet built for stability, and it does not apologize for it.

What makes it work is the construction. Cameron went multi-material here, pairing a 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum component with heavier 303 stainless steel to push weight to the extremes of the head. That is where the high MOI comes from. Miss the center of the face and the head resists twisting, so the ball still rolls closer to your intended line and speed than it has any right to. The face is balanced, meaning the putter wants to stay square through the stroke rather than open and close, which suits a straight-back-straight-through motion.

This was also one of the putters that popularized Cameron's Dual Balance idea, an option with a heavier 50-gram head and a counterweight in the grip end. Not everyone loves it, but if you fight the yips or a handsy release, the extra mass calms things down. The standard X5 is plenty for most people. Either way, you are getting a putter engineered to make your bad strokes look less bad.

Design

The head is a compact mallet, smaller and more contained than the wide fanged mallets that were everywhere in 2015, and that is deliberate. Cameron kept the footprint tight so the putter frames the ball cleanly without looking like a spaceship at address. The multi-material build is visible in the tones, with the machined aluminum section contrasting against the stainless steel body. Two parallel sight lines run over the top, one on each side of the ball, giving you a channel to aim through rather than a single dot to guess at. At address the flat, quiet topline and the twin lines do most of the aiming work for you. The finish is understated, no loud colors or gimmicks, which is on-brand for Cameron. It comes in the usual length options, and Cameron's custom shop meant you could tweak weighting, grips, and finishes if you wanted to fuss over it. Left as-is, it is a clean, serious-looking mallet that reads square without you having to work at it.

Who It's For

  • Blade loyalists who want a forgiveness upgrade but refuse to leave the Cameron name behind
  • Straight-back-straight-through strokers, since the face-balanced setup wants to stay square rather than arc
  • Players who mis-hit toward the toe or heel and lose distance, because the high MOI holds ball speed on off-center strikes
  • Anyone who aims better with two framing lines than a single sight dot
  • Golfers considering the Dual Balance version to quiet an overactive or twitchy release

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Scotty Cameron Futura X5 face balanced or does it have toe hang?
It is face balanced. Rest the shaft on your finger and the face points at the sky. That makes it a better fit for a straight, minimal-arc stroke. If you have a strong arc where the face rotates a lot, a toe-hang putter will feel more natural.
What is the difference between the Futura X5 and the X5 Dual Balance?
Same head shape and alignment setup, different weighting. The Dual Balance adds a heavier 50-gram head weight and a counterweight up in the grip end, which raises the balance point and slows down a handsy release. It is the one to look at if you struggle with the short ones or fight the yips. The standard X5 is lighter and more traditional feeling.
Why does the Futura X5 use aluminum instead of all steel?
Cameron went multi-material on purpose. Aluminum is light, so using it in the center lets him move the saved weight out to the heel and toe with heavier stainless steel. That perimeter weighting is what gives the X5 its high MOI and its stability on mishits. An all-steel head that size would be too heavy and would not spread the weight the same way.
How forgiving is the Futura X5 on off-center putts?
Very, by Cameron standards. The whole design goal was resistance to twisting. Catch a putt slightly toward the toe or heel and the head stays steadier than a blade would, so you hold more of your ball speed and the roll stays closer to your line. It will not fix a bad read, but it takes some of the sting out of a slightly off strike.
Is the 2015 Futura X5 still worth buying today?
If you like a compact, stable mallet and can find one in good shape, yes. It plays on the used market now, so you are getting genuine Cameron milling and a proven high-MOI design for well under the price of a new model. Check the face and sole for wear and make sure the length suits you, since a shortened or lengthened shaft changes the feel.
