  1. Know your current 7-iron carry distance

GolfSource needs at least one carry distance to run a match. The 7-iron is the best starting point because it sits in the middle of the set and gives the algorithm the most accurate picture of your overall ball speed. If you have carry numbers for additional irons (5-iron, 9-iron, pitching wedge), enter all of them — more data points improve accuracy.

Tip: Use a launch monitor or GPS device for accurate carry distances. Estimates from feel are fine too, but results will be less precise.
  2. Select your current iron set as a baseline

You will be asked to choose the iron set you currently play. This helps GolfSource calculate how much distance you are gaining, losing, or maintaining relative to your current lofts. If you are a beginner without a current set, choose any standard game-improvement iron as a neutral baseline.

Tip: You can search for your irons by brand, model name, or year on the selection screen.
  3. Enter your carry distances

On the next screen, enter carry distances for whichever irons you know. You must enter at least one. GolfSource uses loft gaps between clubs to interpolate any missing distances, so even a single 7-iron number will generate a full set comparison. For the most accurate results, enter 3–4 clubs spread across the set.

Tip: Carry distance means where the ball lands — not total rollout distance. If you only know total distance, subtract roughly 10–15% for a carry estimate.
  4. Review your ranked results

GolfSource scores every published iron set in the database against your distances. The results page shows each set ranked by an overall match score, with sub-scores for distance alignment, gapping, and forgiveness suitability. The top result is the set whose loft progression most closely mirrors your carry profile.

Tip: Higher-ranked sets are not necessarily better irons — they are better matches for your specific numbers. A blade may outscore a game-improvement iron for a low handicapper who hits it pure.
  5. Compare and explore specs

Click any result card to see full loft specifications for that iron set. Use the Compare feature to put two sets side by side — helpful when choosing between a current favourite and a new option. The Iron Database lets you filter by brand, category, and year to browse the full catalogue.

Tip: The 'Use as My Baseline' button on any iron page lets you re-run the finder with that set as your reference point.
  6. Take your shortlist to a fitter

GolfSource narrows your field from 2,400+ sets to 5–10 strong candidates. Bring that shortlist to your club fitter so they can test those specific models with your actual swing on a launch monitor. This saves fitting time and gives you confidence going in.
