Scotty Cameron Futura 5CB Putter

2018Mallet

Mallet Putter

The Futura 5CB is Scotty Cameron's take on a compact mallet, part of the 2018 Futura family that sits between his classic blades and the bigger, boxier mallets like the 6M and 7M. It gives you a rounded, mid-size head with real perimeter weighting, but it stays small enough that a blade player won't feel like they're swinging a shovel. If you've wanted the stability of a mallet without the visual bulk, this is the shape Cameron built for you.

What makes it work is the balance. The 5CB has mid toe hang, so it fits a stroke with a slight to moderate arc rather than a straight-back-straight-through motion. That toe hang lets the face rotate naturally through impact instead of fighting your hands. Pair that with the extra forgiveness from the larger footprint and you get a putter that holds its line on off-center strikes better than any Newport, while still feeling like a putter you can flow with feel around the greens.

This isn't a max-forgiveness face-balanced mallet, and it doesn't try to be. It's for the player who arcs the stroke, misreads a few, and wants a bigger head to bail them out without giving up the release they're used to. Roll a few and it feels familiar fast.

Design

The Futura line is built from more than one metal on purpose. Cameron mills a lightweight 6061 aircraft aluminum section into the face and center of the head, then bolts on heavier 303 stainless steel around the perimeter and in the wings. Taking mass out of the middle and pushing it to the edges raises the MOI, so the head resists twisting when you catch a putt off the toe or heel. That's where the forgiveness comes from, not from just making the head bigger. Up top you get a clean alignment aid to frame the ball and square the face at address, which suits the 5CB's job as a putter that helps you start the ball on line. The mid toe hang comes from the neck and shaft setup, so the whole package is matched to an arced stroke rather than forced to be something it isn't.

Who It's For

  • You have a slight to moderate arc in your stroke and want a mallet that lets the face release instead of resisting it.
  • You like the stability and higher MOI of a mallet but find the full-size 6M and 7M shapes too big over the ball.
  • You struggle with starting putts on your intended line and want an alignment aid to help you set up square.
  • You're moving up from a Newport or another blade and want more forgiveness on mishits without relearning your tempo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of putting stroke does the Futura 5CB suit?
It's built for a stroke with a slight to moderate arc. The mid toe hang means the toe points down a bit when you balance the putter, which tells you the face is meant to open and close through the stroke. If you have a straight-back-straight-through stroke, a face-balanced mallet will fit you better than this one.
Is the Futura 5CB a mallet or a mid-mallet?
It's a compact mallet, sometimes called a mid-mallet. The head is bigger and more rounded than a Newport blade, so you get mallet-style perimeter weighting and forgiveness, but it's smaller than the full Futura mallets like the 6M and 7M. It reads as a friendlier size for players coming off a blade.
Why is the Futura 5CB made from two different metals?
Cameron uses lightweight aircraft aluminum in the center and heavier stainless steel around the outside of the head. Moving weight away from the middle and out to the perimeter raises the moment of inertia, so the head twists less on off-center hits. That multi-material build is how the Futura keeps a normal head size while still gaining stability.
Does the alignment aid actually help you aim?
The sight line on top gives you a reference to square the face and pick your start line at address. It won't fix a bad read, but for a player who tends to set up open or closed, having a clear line to frame against the ball makes it easier to aim the putter where you're actually looking.
How is the Futura 5CB different from a Scotty Cameron Newport?
The Newport is a blade with a smaller head and more toe hang, tuned for a stronger arc and a golfer who wants maximum feedback and workability. The 5CB trades some of that for a larger, more forgiving head that holds its line on mishits. Both release through impact, but the 5CB is the more stable, more forgiving of the two.
