Mallet Putter

TaylorMade built the Spider X to answer a specific complaint about the original Spider Tour. That putter won on tour and sold well, but plenty of golfers found the head too big and too tall behind the ball. The Spider X shrinks the footprint by roughly ten percent without giving up the stability that made the line popular. It looks less like a spaceship and more like a putter you'd actually want to look down at.

The way TaylorMade held onto the forgiveness is the interesting part. They wrapped a heavier steel frame around a lighter aluminum core and pushed 19-gram steel and tungsten weights out to the extreme heel and toe. That mass distribution keeps MOI high even though the head got smaller, so off-center putts still hold their line better than you'd expect from something this compact.

This is the slant neck version, which gives you mid toe hang. That matters. If you have a slight arc in your stroke, the way most golfers do, this hosel setup will feel natural and let the face rotate the way your hands want it to. Face-balanced mallets fight that motion. The Spider X in this configuration works with it.

Design

The alignment story here is the True Path system, a wide contrasting channel that runs from the top rail back through the crown. It draws your eye straight to the target instead of relying on a couple of thin dots or lines. Whether the color scheme is the copper and white or the navy and white, that central sightline is the first thing you notice at address, and it does make squaring the face easier for people who struggle to aim. The face uses TaylorMade's Pure Roll insert with 45-degree grooves designed to get the ball rolling forward sooner. Feel off the insert is soft but not mushy, with enough click to give you distance feedback on longer putts. Combined with the multi-material body, the whole head produces a solid, muted response that many players prefer over a firmer milled face.

Who It's For

  • You have a slight to moderate arc in your stroke and want a mallet that rotates naturally instead of fighting your hands.
  • You liked the stability of the original Spider Tour but wanted a head that sits smaller and less bulky behind the ball.
  • Aiming is a weak point for you, and a bold central alignment channel helps more than small dots or a single line.
  • You want high forgiveness on mishits without moving all the way to an oversized face-balanced mallet.
  • You prefer a soft insert feel with a bit of feedback over a firmer milled sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the TaylorMade Spider X face-balanced or does it have toe hang?
It depends on the hosel. This slant neck model has mid toe hang, which suits a slight-arc stroke. TaylorMade also made a single-bend version that is face-balanced for straighter strokes, so check which neck you're looking at before you buy.
How is the Spider X different from the original Spider Tour?
The Spider X has a smaller, lower-profile head, roughly ten percent more compact. TaylorMade kept the MOI high by using a steel frame around an aluminum core with heavy heel-toe weights, so you get similar forgiveness in a package that looks less oversized at address.
What is the True Path alignment on the Spider X?
It's the wide contrasting channel running down the center of the crown from the face back. Instead of small dots, you get one bold line pointing at your target, which helps a lot of golfers square the face and start putts on line.
Does the Spider X have a soft or firm feel?
It's on the softer side thanks to the Pure Roll insert, but not dead. You get a muted, solid response with enough feedback to judge distance. If you're coming from a firm milled putter, expect a noticeably softer sound and feel.
Who should play the mid toe hang Spider X?
Golfers with a slight to moderate arc in their putting stroke. The toe hang lets the face release naturally through impact. If your stroke is dead straight back and through, you'd likely be better off with the face-balanced single-bend version.
