In short
The PXG Hot Rod ZT (2026) is a mallet putter built for stability and easier alignment. It has mid toe hang. It carries a $449 MSRP.
Most mallets are built to take your hands out of the stroke. The Hot Rod ZT goes the other direction. PXG gave this 2026 mallet mid toe hang, which means the head wants to rotate open and closed through the stroke rather than staying square to the target line the whole way. If you've ever picked up a mallet, liked the forgiveness, and then felt like the putter was fighting your release on anything past 15 feet, the balance was the reason.
The other thing you notice at address is the top of the head. No sightline, no dot, no white bar running back from the face. You aim this one with the shape of the body and the leading edge, the way you'd aim a blade. Some players will call that a missing feature. Others have spent years fighting a painted line that pointed somewhere their eyes flatly disagreed with, and for those players a clean crown is a relief.
Put the two together and the ZT is a mallet for a golfer who doesn't actually want mallet behavior. You keep the higher MOI and the stability on strikes off the heel or toe. You skip the face-balanced feel that makes an arcing stroke feel blocked. That's a narrower fit than most mallets aim for, and PXG clearly knew it when they built this one.
The head is a mallet, so mass moves back and out toward the perimeter instead of sitting close behind the face. That's the whole source of the forgiveness. A heel or toe strike twists the head less than it would on a blade of similar weight, so the ball holds its line better and loses less speed. What separates the ZT from the rest of the mallet category is the balance. Hang the shaft across your finger and the face tips toward the ground at roughly 45 degrees rather than pointing straight up. That's mid toe hang, and on a head this size it's uncommon. The crown carries no alignment aid at all. Aiming comes from the outline of the body and the top edge of the face, which puts real weight on your setup routine. Players who square the face by feel and by looking at the leading edge tend to aim these better than they aim a lined mallet. Players who rely on a sightline to start the ball will notice the absence immediately.
