Frequently Asked Questions
What is wedge gapping?
Wedge gapping refers to the loft spacing between your short irons and wedges. Consistent 4-6° gaps ensure you have a club for every yardage from ~100 yards in, with no distances falling between clubs.
How many wedges should I carry?
Most golfers carry 3 wedges: a gap wedge (50-54°), sand wedge (54-58°), and lob wedge (58-64°). Some carry 2 (a sand and lob wedge) and rely on their pitching wedge for longer wedge shots. Tour pros often carry 3-4 wedges.
What loft should my gap wedge be?
A gap wedge should sit 4-6° above your pitching wedge loft. If your PW is 46°, a 50° or 52° gap wedge is standard. The goal is no yardage gap between your PW and next wedge.
Why does my pitching wedge loft matter?
Modern game-improvement irons often have a 'jacked' PW as low as 40-42°, creating a large gap to traditional sand wedges at 56°. Knowing your exact PW loft lets you plan a wedge setup with consistent 4-6° spacing.
