TaylorMade Spider EX Putter

Mallet Putter

The Spider EX is TaylorMade's answer to a specific problem: what if you have an arced putting stroke but still want the forgiveness of a big mallet? Most high-MOI mallets are face-balanced, which suits a straight-back-straight-through stroke. The EX breaks from that. It comes with mid toe hang, so the face rotates open and closed through the stroke the way an arc putter naturally wants it to.

Released in 2021, this putter sits in the middle of the Spider family, more compact and refined than the older Spider Tour but built on the same high-stability idea. The head pairs a lightweight aluminum core with heavier steel and tungsten around the edges. Pushing mass to the perimeter is what keeps the face from twisting on off-center hits, and the EX does that while still giving your hands feedback on where you struck it.

If you've tried a Spider before and liked the stability but felt the head fought your stroke, the EX is worth a look. It's the version that plays nice with a bit of arc.

Design

The body uses a multi-material build. A light aluminum center frame is wrapped by a steel and tungsten perimeter, which is how TaylorMade gets the weight out to the edges for a high moment of inertia. On top you get the True Path alignment, a white channel that runs front to back and stands out clearly against the navy head, making it easy to square the face and see your line at address. The face has TaylorMade's Pure Roll insert, an aluminum insert with angled grooves meant to get the ball rolling forward sooner off the face. Feel is firm but not clicky, with enough response that you can tell a heel or toe miss from a center strike. The single-bend and small-slant hosel options change the toe hang slightly, but the standard EX lands at mid toe hang, which is the whole point of this model.

Who It's For

  • You have a slight to moderate arc in your stroke and want mallet forgiveness without a face-balanced head fighting you.
  • Alignment is a weak spot and the wide True Path channel helps you aim with confidence.
  • You miss toward the heel and toe often enough that a high-MOI head would save you strokes on distance control.
  • You want a modern mallet that still gives real feedback on strike location instead of a dead, muffled feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Spider EX face-balanced or does it have toe hang?
The standard Spider EX has mid toe hang, not face-balanced. That's what separates it from a lot of other high-MOI mallets. If your stroke has a slight to moderate arc, the toe hang lets the face rotate the way your hands already want it to. If you have a dead-straight stroke, a face-balanced mallet would fit you better.
What's the difference between the Spider EX and the older Spider Tour?
The EX is a more compact, refined version of the Spider platform. Both use perimeter weighting for high stability, but the EX has a cleaner shape at address, the Pure Roll insert, and the True Path alignment channel. The Spider Tour is the larger, more traditional tour mallet. The EX aims to keep most of the forgiveness in a slightly smaller package.
Does the Pure Roll insert actually help my putts?
The Pure Roll insert uses angled grooves designed to reduce skid and start the ball rolling forward sooner. Whether you notice it depends on your stroke and green speed, but the practical benefit is more consistent distance control, especially on lag putts where early roll keeps the ball tracking on line. Feel is firm with clear feedback, not soft and muted.
Is the Spider EX good for high handicappers?
It can be, because the high MOI holds distance and direction better on mishits, and the alignment aid makes aiming easier. The one thing to check is the mid toe hang. If you have a straight-back-straight-through stroke, which some newer players do, a face-balanced putter would match you better. Match the toe hang to how your putter naturally releases and the EX is a forgiving option.
What hosel options does the Spider EX come in?
The EX is offered in a single-bend and a small-slant hosel. Both keep the putter in the mid toe hang range, so the fit stays consistent with an arced stroke. The choice mostly comes down to how you like the shaft to look at address and slight differences in how the head sits behind the ball.
