The 2017 M2 is TaylorMade's max-distance game improvement iron, and it makes no secret of what it's chasing. The 7-iron sits at 28.5 degrees, which is closer to what a 6-iron used to be, and the whole set follows suit with a 43.5-degree pitching wedge. If you want to hit your 7-iron farther than the guy you play with, this club was built for exactly that.
What you get is a cast head with a hollow body construction and a face designed to flex and give the ball extra speed off the sweet spot and low on the face. TaylorMade paired the strong lofts with a low center of gravity so the ball still climbs and holds a green, at least on the longer irons. The 8, 9, and wedge get progressively more conventional as the lofts weaken through the set.
This is a wide-sole, thick-topline iron that hides very little about what it is. It launches high, flies far, and forgives a lot. What it does not do is give you the feedback or the workability a better player might want, and the strong lofts create some gapping questions you should think through before you buy.

The M2 uses a cast head with a hollow body, which lets TaylorMade thin out the face and let it act more like a trampoline. Combine that thin, fast face with a Speed Pocket slot in the sole of the long irons and you get ball speed that a traditional forged cavity back simply won't match at the same loft. The low center of gravity is what keeps the 19-degree 4-iron and 21.5-degree 5-iron getting airborne despite lofts that would normally run flat. The stronger lofts are the whole strategy here, not an accident. A 28.5-degree 7-iron and a 43.5-degree pitching wedge mean each club carries farther than the number stamped on it suggests. That distance comes with a tradeoff at the scoring end, since a 43.5-degree wedge doesn't drop and stop like a 46 or 47 does, so many players add a gap wedge to fill the space below the set.
The TaylorMade M2's 7-iron is lofted at 28.5° - moderately strong - slightly stronger than traditional lofts. For a golfer with an 85-95 mph swing speed, this projects to a 7-iron carry of approximately 155-165 yards. The 5-iron (21.5°) to 7-iron gap of 7° is well-gapped, which may create overlapping distance windows with similarly lofted fairway woods or hybrids. The pitching wedge at 43.5° provides a conventional loft window that pairs cleanly with a 50-52° gap wedge.
TaylorMade built the M2 as a distance iron, so the lofts run about two to three degrees stronger than a traditional set. A 28.5-degree 7-iron is close to a standard 6-iron. The hollow body and fast face let the ball still launch high despite that strong loft, which is how you get the extra carry without the ball flying low.
Most players do. The pitching wedge is 43.5 degrees, which is stronger than the 46 to 48 degrees you see on many wedges. That leaves a real gap down to a 54 or 56-degree sand wedge. Adding a 48 or 49-degree gap wedge keeps your short-iron and wedge yardages evenly spaced.
Yes, forgiveness is the point. The wide sole, low center of gravity, and hollow body construction hold ball speed and launch on strikes off the center of the face, so a slight miss still flies close to full distance and gets in the air. It won't hide a bad swing, but it takes the sting out of the common ones.
The standard M2 is thicker through the topline and sole, launches higher, and flies farther at the same club number. A players iron gives you thinner lines, weaker lofts, more shot shaping, and cleaner feedback, but less raw distance and forgiveness. If you want to work the ball and feel the strike, this isn't that iron.
On the longer irons, not much, because the low CG launches the ball high enough to land soft. The tradeoff shows up more with the pitching wedge, since 43.5 degrees doesn't drop as steeply as a weaker wedge. For approach shots into firm greens, a well-gapped set of wedges below the M2 matters more than the iron lofts themselves.
