Tour Fairway Wood
The Epic Flash Sub Zero was Callaway's low-spin driver for 2019, and it's the club that kicked off all the talk about AI-designed faces. Callaway ran a machine-learning process across thousands of face iterations to land on what they called Flash Face, a variable-thickness pattern that a human engineer wouldn't have drawn by hand. The point of all that computing was one thing: more ball speed, especially on strikes that miss the center.
The Sub Zero is the version built for players who spin the ball too much and lose distance because of it. It puts the center of gravity low and forward, which cuts spin and flattens the trajectory. If your standard driver launches high and balloons in the wind, this head does the opposite.
This is not a max-forgiveness driver, and Callaway never pretended it was. The Sub Zero trades a little bit of the wide-open MOI you get in the standard Epic Flash for lower spin and a more penetrating flight. Faster swingers and better ball strikers are the target, and for them the numbers can be very good.
- Faster swing speeds that produce too much spin and want a flatter, more efficient ball flight
- Better ball strikers who are comfortable giving up some forgiveness for lower spin and more control
- Anyone who currently loses distance to a ballooning, high-spin drive and needs the launch monitor spin number to come down
Câu hỏi thường gặp
- What is the difference between the Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero?
- The standard Epic Flash is the more forgiving, higher-launching, higher-spin option built for the widest range of golfers. The Sub Zero moves the center of gravity low and forward to cut spin and lower the flight, which suits faster or better players who spin the ball too much. If your misses need help, go standard. If your good drives spin too much, go Sub Zero.
- What does Flash Face actually do?
- Flash Face is a variable-thickness face pattern that Callaway arrived at using a machine-learning process rather than traditional hand design. The goal is faster ball speed across more of the face, so off-center hits hold onto more distance than they would with a conventional face.
- How adjustable is the Epic Flash Sub Zero?
- You get an OptiFit hosel to change loft and lie, plus two interchangeable weights that let you nudge the head toward even lower spin or slightly more stability. It covers the settings most players actually use without getting overly complicated.
- Is the Epic Flash Sub Zero good for a slower swing speed?
- It can work, but it is not the natural fit. The low-forward center of gravity that makes it great for high-spin players also makes it launch lower and spin less, and slower swings usually want more of both. If your speed is on the lower side, the standard Epic Flash or a more draw-biased model will likely give you better carry.
- Does the Sub Zero come in high enough lofts for me?
- It was offered in lower stock lofts than a typical game-improvement driver, in the 9 and 10.5 degree range, and the OptiFit hosel lets you adjust from there. Because it launches and spins low by design, many players end up wanting the higher loft option and adding a bit more through the hosel.
