Wishon Golf Sterling Single Length アイアン

プレーヤーズディスタンス2016

The Sterling Single Length irons came out in 2016, a full year before Cobra put single length on television through Bryson DeChambeau. Tom Wishon, who spent decades designing clubs for the component and custom fitting world, built them with long drive pro Jaacob Bowden. The premise is simple to say and radical to play: every iron in the bag is the same length, so your posture, ball position, and swing stay identical from the 5-iron down to the sand wedge.

Wishon built the set at 8-iron length, roughly 36.5 inches, with a 36.75 inch option for taller players. That choice matters. The old Tommy Armour EQL sets from the 1980s used longer builds and died partly because the wedges felt unwieldy. Going shorter makes every club easier to control, but it also drains ball speed from the low lofted irons. Sterling's answer is a high-COR forged face on the 5, 6, and 7 irons that puts that speed back.

One more thing worth knowing before you get attached: Sterling was never a rack club. Wishon sells heads through independent clubmakers and, since 2017, through Diamond Golf International. You get fit and built by a professional, or you don't get them at all. For the kind of golfer drawn to single length in the first place, that's probably the right way to do it.

About the Wishon Golf Sterling Single Length

The set splits into two constructions. From 5-iron through 7-iron, a thin HS300 forged steel face sits on a carbon steel body, pushing COR close to fairway wood territory. That face is doing real work, because a 5-iron swung at 8-iron length would otherwise land well short of a conventional one. From the 8-iron through the wedges, the heads are one-piece carbon steel castings, since a shorter than normal shaft is no handicap when the club was going to be short anyway. Lofts run a touch stronger than traditional at the long end to protect gapping, which is why the Players Distance label fits despite the modest head shape. The profile itself is clean: moderate topline, moderate offset, closer to a game improvement iron than a blade but not bulky. Wishon designed for clubfitters, and it shows. Bore-through hosels are absent, lie angles bend easily, and the whole set is meant to be tuned to one person.

Who Should Play the Wishon Golf Sterling Single Length?

  • Players whose contact falls apart as the irons get longer and who would trade a little 5-iron carry for centered strikes.
  • Mid and high handicappers who practice rarely and want one setup and one swing to maintain instead of nine.
  • Anyone curious about single length who wants a proper custom fitting rather than pulling a boxed set off a shelf.

よくある質問

What length are the Wishon Sterling Single Length irons?

Every club is built to 8-iron length, about 36.5 inches, with a 36.75 inch build available for taller golfers. That's shorter than Cobra's later one length sets, which use 7-iron length at around 37.25 inches.

Do you lose distance with the Sterling 5-iron and 6-iron?

Less than you'd expect. The 5 through 7 irons use a high-COR forged face that recovers most of the ball speed lost to the shorter shaft. Slower swingers may still see gaps compress at the long end of the set, which is why Wishon steers those players toward starting the set at the 6-iron and adding a hybrid.

How do the Sterling irons compare to Cobra One Length?

Sterling came first, in 2016, and is built shorter, at 8-iron length versus Cobra's 7-iron length. Sterling is also custom only, sold through clubmakers, while Cobra sells standard builds at retail. The shorter Sterling build favors control; Cobra's longer build keeps more raw speed.

Can you still buy Wishon Sterling irons?

Yes, as component heads through independent clubfitters and Diamond Golf International, which has distributed Wishon designs since 2017. There's no off the rack version, so plan on a fitting and a custom build.

Are single length irons good for high handicappers?

They can be. One ball position and one posture is a real simplification for someone who doesn't practice much, and an 8-iron length 5-iron is far easier to hit than a conventional one. The trade is a lower, shorter flight from the long irons, so golfers with slow swing speeds should be honest about how much 5-iron they actually need.
